Vietnam: Vietnam inspects major airports after baggage theft complaints

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on Wednesday launched security inspections at big airports, aiming to find out how and when baggage theft could happen despite increased surveillance. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has ordered enhanced surveillance of staff at airports following many recent complaints about luggage theft. Federal agents have busted an alleged marijuana smuggling ring involving baggage handlers working at Oakland International Airport, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. An employee at the Xiamen Airport was caught after stealing RMB 60,000 from a passenger's baggage to pay back his gambling debt. Portugal, Oporto: Police investigate 'massive' baggage theft ring at Oporto Airport.

Portugal's Attorney-General has confirmed that police have conducted searches at a number of locations, including Sa Carneiro airport as part of a massive investigation into baggage theft from the Oporto airport. USA: CNN reports US Airport Security Equipment Improperly Managed.

CNN reports that airport security equipment including x-ray equipment and explosives detection devices are being improperly managed at US airports.  Maintenance is lacking and the US Department of Homeland Security cannot confirm that any particular device is in working order.
