Australia: Customs officer faces sentencing for conspiracy to import pseudoephedrine.
A customs officer, Cranney, was convicted in an Australian court for conspiring with a drug syndicate to smuggle pseudoephedrine through secure airport areas and is awaiting sentencing. The 39 year old senior customs officer worked with baggage handlers to smuggle precursor drug shipments undetected through customs controls. Using his position as team leader, the disgraced officer facilitated multiple such shipments. The court has previously heard that the scam involved smuggling drug-loaded suitcases from Vietnam into Australia, and included drug couriers, baggage handlers, and a number of customs officials. Cranney and his co-offenders had planned three importations within the space of a week at one stage, but were caught before the importations could be completed. Police seized about 40 kilograms of the drug, capable of making an estimated $9.5 million worth of ice, from the final importation on June 6.
